Finished in the eye catching combination of Island Green over Gloss Black, the car has with the contrasting Green Leather interior and comes to us from the estate of its previous keeper, a man who clearly looked after the car exceptionally well, being a testament to his careful stewardship.
Reading the extensive history files we hold, this Varitone underwent a full restoration program between 1993 and 1996 that included new sills, floor panels, a bare metal respray, a brake overhaul, stainless steel exhaust and a retrim in the original Green leather. Being pre 1965, this car would not have had seat belts from new however in 2001 the owner had a set of front and rear Green belts made for increased passenger safety and a terrific addition if you want to take the children or grandchildren out. In 2006, the Z Type engine was upgraded with a polished and ported rebuilt 1800cc MGB unit resulting in a significantly improvement in both performance and drivability and then in 2010, to better manage the MGB power unit, the four speed gearbox was replaced with a rebuilt Type 9 five-speed with an upgraded differential. This thoughtful pairing has resulted in a smooth, flexible and thoroughly enjoyable drive that feels right at home on modern roads especially when in 202, it was the subject of a further brake system overhaul.
The car carries chassis number 25555 and is Varitone build number 2474, the Varitone model of the Magnette ZB being produced from 1956 to 1959 and were the improved evolution of the earlier ZA model. It featured more power, revised styling with a wider rear window and enhanced two-tone colour options that gave the Varitone a distinctive, sophisticated presence. The ZB featured a monocoque body construction and benefitted from strong MG sporting traditions making it a true family sports saloon of the era.
It is good to see from the history that this car has continued to see enthusiastic and regular use both in the UK and European with it taking a tour to Le Mans and being a regular visitor to Brooklands. Among the large documentation file, now presented in two of our RFH Classics History folders, you will find a wealth of historical detail including MOT certificates dating back as far as 1977. Additionally, there are the service records to accompany the MOT’s, details of the restoration and the various upgrades conducted over the years.
Particularly charming is the presence of the original buff style logbook which confirms its very first owner was Mrs Miriam Page of Appleby. Miriam went on to keep the car through to 1971 adding a lovely sense of provenance and continuity. This beautifully presented and extensively documented Varitone will be sold with the benefit of a service and a fresh independent mot test to provide the new keeper additional piece of mind.
